A drawing set is not one document. It is a family of views, each answering a different question about the same building. Knowing which is which saves a great deal of time in a coordination meeting.
Plans
A horizontal cut through the building, looking down. Floor plans cut roughly four feet above the floor, so they show doors and windows but not the ceiling. Site plans zoom out to the property. Roof plans look straight down at the roof.
Elevations
Straight-on views of a vertical face, at true scale. Exterior elevations show the outside of each facade. Interior elevations show a wall inside a room, and are how tile, casework and fixture heights get communicated.
Sections
A vertical cut through the building. Where a plan shows arrangement, a section shows build-up: floor thicknesses, ceiling voids, structural depth, how one storey meets the next.
Reflected ceiling plans
The ceiling, drawn as if mirrored on the floor so it aligns with the floor plan below. Lighting, diffusers, sprinklers, grid and soffits. See the full explanation.
Details
Zoomed-in drawings of a junction — where a window meets a wall, where a roof meets a parapet. Usually at 1:5 or 1:10, and where most of the real construction information lives.
Schedules
Tables rather than drawings: doors, windows, finishes, equipment. Each item keyed to a tag that appears on the plans, following the office abbreviation conventions. The rest of the vocabulary sits in the knowledge center.
Which of these come from a laser scan
All of the geometric ones. Plans, elevations, sections and reflected ceiling plans are cut directly from the registered point cloud, which is why they agree with each other — they are views of a single measurement rather than separate drawings made on separate visits. Producing them as one set is what an as-built survey delivers.
How a set is organized
Sheets are grouped by discipline and numbered within the group, so a reference like A-201 tells you where to look before you have opened anything.
- A architectural, S structural, M mechanical, E electrical, P plumbing, FP fire protection, C civil.
- Within a discipline the order runs general information, plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules. The first digit after the letter usually follows that order.
- Cover sheet and general notes carry the legend, the abbreviation list and the drawing index. On a survey deliverable this is where the method and accuracy record belongs.
An as-built set uses the same structure, which is deliberate. A survey that arrives in its own private numbering costs your team an afternoon before anyone can use it.
Scale decides what a sheet can carry
Scale is not a formatting choice. It sets how much information fits before the drawing stops being legible, which is why it is agreed at scope rather than at delivery.

Existing, demolition, new
The same plan appears three times in a renovation set and means something different each time. Reading the wrong one is the single most common misunderstanding in a coordination meeting.
Existing conditions documents what is there today. It is measured, not designed, and on our projects it comes straight from the registered point cloud.
Demolition shows what is being removed, usually as dashed or greyed elements over the existing plan. It is a design decision drawn on top of a survey.
New work shows the proposed condition. Anything on it that was traced from an unverified record set inherits that record’s errors, which is why the survey underneath matters more than it looks.
Where a project has no reliable base, an existing conditions survey produces the first of the three and the other two are drawn against it.
What gets misread
- A plan is a cut, not a view. Floor plans cut roughly four feet above the floor. Anything higher, a transom, a clerestory, a soffit, appears dashed or not at all, and belongs on the reflected ceiling plan or a section.
- Elevations are not perspectives. Every point is at true scale regardless of depth, which is why a recessed entrance measures the same as the facade around it.
- TYP means it repeats. Annotated once, applying everywhere the same condition occurs. Missing it is how a detail gets priced once instead of forty times.
- NIC is not the same as omitted. Not in contract means somebody else is doing it, not that it is absent from the building.

Frequently asked questions
What order do drawings appear in a set?
Conventionally: general information, site, demolition, plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules. Sheet numbering usually follows the same order, with the A-series for architectural.
What scale are they drawn at?
Floor plans commonly 1/8″ or 1/4″ to the foot, details at 1-1/2″ or 3″. The scale determines how much detail the drawing can carry legibly.
Which drawings can a laser survey produce?
All the geometric ones: plans, elevations, sections, reflected ceiling plans, roof and site plans. Schedules and details follow from the same capture. Design drawings are not a survey product, because they describe intent rather than measurement.
Do we need every drawing type?
Rarely. Most projects need plans plus one or two others, and drafting time follows the number of drawing types rather than the size of the building. Deciding this at scope is the cheapest hour on the project.
